House – A Cacophonic Play
2003, 60 min
Four characters, unable to share a home, suspended between past and future…
An upside-down apartment instead of a conventional stage…
And among characters trapped within the cacophony of fragmented and reassembled Lego pieces, the voice of death imprisoned in the voice of an old woman…
In the play, four characters who share the same house confront the question of whether to demolish it or not, opening up a reckoning between past and future, tradition and modernity. House – A Cacophonic Play is built upon the unresolved cacophony between past and future embodied by these four characters who cannot coexist. Under the shadow of the imbalance created by a fragmented photograph coming back together, they break apart and divide like Lego pieces.
Inviting the audience into an apartment, Ve Diğer Şeyler Collective eliminates the boundaries between performer and spectator, dissolving the traditional relationship between them and placing the audience directly within the performance space.
House – A Cacophonic Play was staged in Wiesbaden in June 2004 as part of “Neue Stücke aus Europa” (New Plays from Europe Theatre Biennale), a continuation of the former Bonn Biennale, where works by emerging European playwrights were presented. Selected alongside Fault Line by Behiç Ak, performed by Genco Erkal, the play was presented to German audiences between 17–27 June 2004, among works by playwrights from across Europe. Described by Beilharz as “one of the standout productions of the festival,” it was also staged in Berlin in 2004 as part of the Şimdi/Now Festival at Hebbel Theatre, in a space known as the “Wilson Room,” named for being frequently used by Robert Wilson for rehearsals.

“Home is a cacophonic play that powerfully conveys life, death, time, silence, noise, and the familiar states of existence with an impressive rhythm—successfully drawing the audience into its world.” İstem Erdener, Radikal
“Ve Diğer Şeyler Collective presents a work that is quite different from conventional plays. From staging to acting, from language to characters, from set to subject, from theatrical language to structure, it creates ‘a new play’ while engaging with concepts such as ‘old–new,’ ‘tradition–future,’ and ‘feudal–contemporary.’” Mustafa Kara, Evrensel
“A unique experience…” Time Out Istanbul
