Limping Tales from Istanbul
2004, 60 min
A play built on a limping rhythm—where everything goes wrong, yet somehow continues!
Limping Tales from Istanbul is a work centered on structuring sound, text, and performance through the concept of aksak rhythm, rooted in Ottoman musical tradition. The play text consists of 12 interconnected characters and 12 fragmented monologues. The internal rhythm of the stories, as well as the way they come together, draws inspiration from the rhythmic system known as aksak in Turkish classical music.
Developed through concepts such as flow/disruption, symmetry/asymmetry, and harmony/disharmony, the play offers an interpretation of harmony within irregularity.
