Love and Fascism
2014, 100’
Love and Fascism is a project developed for the 18th Istanbul International Theatre Festival, bringing together Gianina Cărbunariu (Romania), Linda McLean (Scotland), and Helena Tornero (Spain).
In this production, Yeşim Özsoy conceived a minimalist staging language moving between reality and fiction, foregrounding female energy. Drawing from their own lives, the associations evoked by the concepts of love and fascism, and their conversations with one another, the writers created texts grounded in real experiences.
Four separate texts, developed in parallel and nourished by the writers’ exchanges via Skype, came together as a single performance structure through the process of direction and staging.
Working through dualities such as darkness/light, concealment/openness, and covered/uncovered, the play integrates light, movement, and text to offer a subjective and critical perspective on contemporary forms of fascism.
*The production was realized as a co-production of the Istanbul International Theatre Festival, with the valuable support of the Istanbul Cervantes Institute and the Dimitrie Cantemir Romanian Cultural Center.
