Play Alla Turca

2000, 60 min

A tragicomic tale of the lost…

Play Alla Turca is a contemporary piece with an original text, built upon Ottoman performing arts traditions such as Karagöz and Hacivat, Ortaoyunu, and Meddah storytelling. Bringing these traditional characters onto the contemporary stage, the play presents their unresolved stories through a tragicomic lens. It is, in essence, the melancholic expression of a play that can never quite be performed.

First staged in February 2000 at Producer’s Club, an off-Off Broadway venue in New York, the play was later presented at the New York International Fringe Festival in August 2000.
