Visibility Project

2004-2012

For eight years in Galata, GalataPerform developed a multilayered project centered on public space—one that thought with the neighborhood and moved within it. Throughout this period, streets, squares, shops, cafés, empty buildings, and temporary venues were transformed into alternative sites of encounter for performance, theatre, and interdisciplinary practices.

Each year, a neighborhood-based cultural map was designed as part of the project, featuring all events. Using this map, audiences explored Galata street by street, following performances, shows, and gatherings across different locations. In this way, the act of watching shifted from a fixed venue to a dynamic process of discovery embedded within the fabric of the neighborhood.

The program was structured as a multifaceted platform including public space performances, site-specific works, interdisciplinary productions, talks, workshops, music performances, and parties. Artists, local shopkeepers, residents, and audiences became part of the process—sometimes through spontaneous encounters, sometimes through direct participation.

Sustained over eight years, the project created an experiential field that integrated art into the everyday life of the neighborhood, dissolving the boundaries between audience and artist, space and production. During this time, Galata became not just a backdrop, but an active component of the narrative.
