Language

2014, 75’

Şenay Tanrıvermiş’s debut play Language, selected for the programme of the 2nd New Text New Theatre Festival, was staged under the direction of Yeşim Özsoy.

Arzu is an elegant woman in her late thirties. Marrylou has lost one of her silk-cashmere fingerless gloves and is constantly searching for it. When her son Yiğit appears, surreal yet strikingly real dialogues unfold between mother and son, touching on consumption, centralization, and the frenzy of urbanization, drawing the audience into their world. Berna, a social authority figure, the earthquakes taking place upstairs, and even the professor with his own problems cannot, unfortunately, offer any remedy to Arzu and Yiğit’s dependency on consumer culture.

The play portrays the everyday life of a social class on the verge of disappearance through a grotesque frame, skillfully combining everyday language with the language of popular culture, and the language of consumption with that of politics. Within a fantastical atmosphere, it traces the losses of an entire society.
